Truck Driver Tax Deductions in Canada
For the most part, truck drivers can write off almost anything that follows these 3 rules:
The expense has not been reimbursed
Valid log books and records are kept
Receipts are provided.
However, tax deductions can vary depending on if you are an Owner Operator servicing a local or long haul area. Local service (within 160 km of home terminal) deductions include:
Mileage and vehicle expenses
Uniform expenses including cleaning
Maintenance and cleaning supplies and tools
Load securement equipment
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Electronics including cell phone and GPS units
Tax deductions for long haul drivers (operating outside of 160 km from home terminal) include the above items as well as:
Transportation expenses including cab fare or hotel/motel charges
Meal expenses (80% of $17.00 per meal for a maximum of 3 meals per day)
In cab living expenses including linens and basic appliances
With all these deductions available, still remember to keep your expenses under control, because you never know when emergency maintenance will come up, or you’ll need to take some time off without pay.
2 Things You May Have Missed
Although the above covers most of your day-to-day expenses, there are a few items that you can write off as a small business owner that you may have missed:
Office supplies including paper, ink, computers, etc.
Mortgage and utilities (if you claim a home office deduction)
Although we’ve done our research, we’re definitely not accountants. It’s best to consult with a certified accountant while completing your taxes to ensure you are writing off the right items and amounts.
